Professional Tree Inspection Glasgow
Beyond a routine visual check, some situations call for planning-grade evidence rather than an opinion: a BS5837 survey to support a planning application, a report for an insurer after a near-miss, or a second opinion before touching a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order. Our lead inspector, Callum Jackson, gained his NPTC Professional Tree Inspector qualification in 2023, so the same person who checks a garden apple tree for canker can also produce the planning-grade BS5837 report that a council planning officer or insurer will actually accept. Where an inspection turns up work that needs doing, our tree surgery and removal team can quote from the same site visit’s findings rather than starting again from scratch.

What is professional tree inspection and do I need it for my Glasgow property?
Professional tree inspection is expert evaluation conducted by certified arborists using advanced methodology and diagnostic equipment. You need it when concerned about tree health, safety risks, insurance requirements, or planning applications. Professional assessment identifies problems invisible to untrained observation, prevents expensive emergencies, and provides legal compliance documentation. Expert evaluation protects family safety while maintaining property value through appropriate tree management and early problem intervention.
How much does professional tree inspection cost in Glasgow?
Professional tree inspection typically costs £295-£895 depending on assessment scope and technical requirements. Single tree evaluation costs £250-£495 while property-wide professional surveys range £495-£895. Investment prevents expensive emergencies, supports insurance claims, and enables cost-effective treatment timing. Professional assessment delivers superior accuracy and reliability compared to basic visual evaluation.
When is the best time for professional tree inspection on my property?
Professional tree inspection can be conducted year-round with optimal timing depending on specific concerns. Late autumn through early spring provides best structural visibility for safety assessment. Growing season inspection better reveals health problems and disease symptoms. Emergency professional assessment needed immediately for storm damage, visible problems, or safety concerns. Annual professional monitoring recommended for valuable or high-risk trees ensuring early problem detection.
How long does professional tree inspection take to complete?
Professional tree inspection can take anywhere from 1-8 hours on-site depending on tree numbers and assessment complexity. Advanced diagnostic techniques require additional time for specialist equipment operation and analysis. Professional reports delivered within 3-5 working days including detailed analysis and recommendations. Emergency professional assessment provides immediate verbal recommendations with formal documentation within 24-48 hours. Quality professional evaluation requires adequate time for comprehensive assessment.
Do I need permission for professional tree inspection on my property?
No permission required for professional tree inspection - it’s non-invasive expert assessment involving no tree work or damage. Professional evaluation may include neighbouring trees affecting your property safety, handled appropriately by certified arborists. Inspection actually protects trees by identifying appropriate management preventing unnecessary intervention. Professional assessment supports tree retention through expert care recommendations maintaining health while ensuring safety compliance.
Can professional tree inspection help with insurance and legal requirements?
Yes, professional tree inspection provides documentation meeting insurance assessment obligations and legal compliance requirements. Expert reports demonstrate duty of care fulfilment protecting against negligence claims and liability exposure. Professional assessment supports insurance claims through technical evidence and appropriate documentation. Industry-standard methodology and qualified assessment satisfy regulatory requirements while strengthening legal positions during disputes or investigations.
What happens if professional tree inspection finds problems?
Professional tree inspection provides clear prioritised recommendations when problems are identified. Urgent safety issues receive immediate attention guidance while long-term problems get appropriate management planning. Expert assessment distinguishes between treatable conditions and removal requirements. Professional recommendations include treatment options, timing considerations, and cost estimates. Ongoing professional support ensures appropriate problem resolution and continued expert monitoring.
How often should I have professional tree inspection on my property?
Professional tree inspection frequency depends on tree condition, age, and risk factors. Annual professional assessment recommended for high-value or high-risk trees. Healthy mature trees benefit from professional evaluation every 2-3 years. Following severe weather, immediate professional assessment identifies storm damage and delayed failure risks. Trees showing health problems require professional monitoring annually until conditions stabilise. Regular professional inspection enables early intervention preventing expensive problems.

What Our Clients Have Said About Us
Jackie Breen
From the first time getting in touch with Callum, the service was fantastic, he came out gave us a great quote and was able to do the job very quickly. The boys that came to carry out the work were professional, friendly and worked non stop to get the job done, they were so careful with machinery on the property as well and left the garden and paths spotless before they left. I would highly recommend them.
Alan
Callum and his team arrived on the agreed day & time, carried out the tree felling with impeccable professionalism and cleared up after. The work was done at the quoted price and they were very pleasant guys with no bad language. I highly recommend CNJ and I will certainly be using Callum and his 5 star tree fellas again.
Robin Campbell
Callum and his team felled four 40-foot+ trees in our garden, facing particular challenges (2 trees hanging over our LPG tank, one menacing a precious rhododendron). They worked incredibly hard, were great to deal with and we would thoroughly recommend them.
What a Professional Tree Inspection Actually Covers
- A trunk, crown and root-plate check for cavities, cracks, fungal fruiting bodies and deadwood
- A root and soil condition check, which matters on the clay-heavy ground common across the Clyde basin, where waterlogging can show up as root-plate movement
- A photographic record of every defect logged against a tree reference number, for insurers, solicitors or planning officers
- A BS5837 planning-grade survey with root protection area calculations, for anyone submitting a planning application or working near a tree covered by a Tree Preservation Order
- Canopy inspection from our own tracked cherry picker where a tree is too tall or awkward to assess properly from the ground, rather than estimating from below
- A written report ranking each tree’s risk level and recommending a timescale for any follow-up work
Not Included / Costed Separately
- The inspection itself does not include any cutting, pruning or felling - if the report flags work, that is quoted and scheduled as a separate job
- Resistograph or tomography testing (checking inside the trunk for internal decay) sits above the standard visual survey and is only used when a visual check alone cannot confirm what is going on
- Submitting a planning application or discharging a Tree Preservation Order condition with the council is the client’s or their agent’s task - the survey supplies the technical evidence, not the paperwork
- Trees on a neighbouring property are only assessed from what is visible or reachable from your side of the boundary, without the neighbour’s permission to enter
How a Booking Goes From First Call to Finished Report
- Initial call: You describe the tree or trees and the reason for the check - a planning application, storm damage, an insurer’s request, or a routine safety review - so the right inspector and equipment get booked, with photos helpful for anything you can’t assess from ground level.
- Site visit: The inspector walks the ground around each tree checking for root-plate lift, fungal brackets and soil cracking, then examines the trunk and crown; where the canopy can’t be seen properly or safely from the ground, the tracked cherry picker goes up instead of sending a climber to look.
- On-site testing where needed: If a visual defect needs confirming, a resistograph or sounding check is carried out there and then rather than booking a return visit.
- Report written up: Findings are written against the standard the client needs - BS5837 for planning, BS3998 for general tree condition, or an insurer’s own format - with photographs and a risk rating for each tree.
- Delivery and follow-up: The report is delivered within the timeframe agreed at booking, with a call to talk through anything flagged as needing action and, on request, a quote for that work based on the same visit.
What Changes the Price of an Inspection
A single-tree safety check costs less than a BS5837 planning survey, because the planning report needs root protection area calculations, a site plan and a written format built to satisfy a council or insurer, while a routine check is mainly the on-site assessment and a shorter written finding. Access changes the price too - a mature tree that needs the tracked cherry picker up in the canopy takes longer on site than one that can be fully assessed from ground level, and any resistograph or sounding test adds time on top of a standard visual check. Multiple trees inspected on the same visit usually work out cheaper per tree than a single call-out, since the inspector’s time getting to and around the site is shared across the group. None of that can be priced accurately over the phone - a firm quote follows a short conversation about what the report is for and, where useful, a look at photos before the visit itself is booked.
How a CNJ Inspection Compares With a Basic Visual Check
| Basic/visual-only tree check | CNJ Tree Services inspection | |
|---|---|---|
| Inspector qualification | General tree surgeon opinion, no formal inspection qualification | NPTC Professional Tree Inspector (PTI) qualified since 2023 |
| Suitable for planning or TPO use | Rarely accepted by planning officers | BS5837-compliant report built for councils and insurers |
| Access to a tall or awkward crown | Often estimated from the ground | Inspected directly from our own tracked cherry picker |
| Liability cover behind the report | Varies by contractor | £5 million public liability insurance |
| Follow-up work if problems are found | Separate contractor needed for a quote | Same team can quote and carry out flagged work from its own plant fleet |
What 18 Years Up Trees Adds to a Written Report
Callum Jackson picked up the NPTC Professional Tree Inspector qualification in 2023, on top of around 18 years of professional chainsaw work that started in a multi-generational Scottish forestry family. That background matters when a report has to say how serious a cavity or a patch of fungal fruiting bodies really is - the description comes from someone who has climbed into that kind of defect and cut around it, not only looked up at it from the base of the trunk. Owning the tracked cherry picker outright means the inspector can get level with a crown on the day of the visit rather than arranging a separate access appointment once equipment is booked in, and if the report flags work that needs doing, the same team can quote and carry it out from its own plant fleet rather than handing the job to someone else. Every survey follows BS3998 and BS5837 and sits behind £5 million public liability insurance.
Where the BS5837 and TPO Work Comes From
Most of the survey work we do within our ten-mile radius of the Newton Place office comes from two kinds of ground. The first is the Victorian-era Conservation Areas around Pollokshields and the West End, where the trees are old enough that cavities, included bark and fungal decay turn up regularly, and a Tree Preservation Order or Conservation Area consent is usually needed before any work goes ahead. The second is development sites near the edge of the radius, where a root protection area calculation has to be worked out before a planning application can go in at all. Glasgow City, East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire planning teams all expect a BS5837 report in broadly the same format, so a survey written for a Pollokshields extension reads the same way whether it ends up in front of a planning officer or is queried later by a neighbour. The clay-heavy ground either side of the Clyde and Kelvin holds water for days after heavy rain, which is often what a root-plate check on an older tree is actually looking for rather than anything visible above ground. The standard radius runs out to Clydebank and Renfrew in the west, Bearsden and Milngavie in the north, and Giffnock and Clarkston to the south; commercial and estate inspection work goes further afield across Scotland, but that wider reach doesn’t apply to a routine domestic survey booking.
Book an Inspection Before the Next Wet Spell
A developing crack or an early patch of fungal decay doesn’t resolve itself, and root-plate movement on clay ground tends to look worse after the next stretch of heavy rain rather than better. If the report is needed for a planning application, booking early also leaves time to fold any recommended work into that same submission instead of it coming up as a query later in the process. Get in touch to arrange a site visit with our NPTC-qualified inspector.
