Fast Response
If a tree in your garden has come down in a storm, is leaning further than it used to, or is just due its yearly crown thin before it outgrows the space, the first thing you actually want is somebody who will look at it, tell you plainly what it needs, and then do that work with the right kit rather than a ladder and a guess. That is the everyday work behind tree surgery in Glasgow: crown reduction on a street tree hanging over a driveway, felling a diseased sycamore too close to a fence line, grinding out an old stump before turf goes back down, or a BS5837 survey a planning consultant needs before an extension can go ahead. CNJ Tree Services covers Glasgow within roughly 10 miles of our Newton Place base, and this page is the overview of that full range, felling, pruning, stump work, cabling, surveys and emergency response, rather than any one part of it in isolation.
If you already know which of those you need, two pages go into more depth than we can here. Storm-damaged and dangerous trees do not wait for office hours, so if that is what has brought you here, see our emergency tree removal page for how the storm-response call-out actually works. For a lower-key job, taking out an old stump left over from a previous felling, for instance, our stump grinding page covers the difference between grinding and full root removal in more detail than we can below. What follows here is the general picture: what is included in an ordinary visit, how a job actually runs from first call to cleared site, what tends to drive the price up or down, and the team and area behind all of it.
From Bearsden to East Kilbride, we are Glasgow’s trusted tree care partner supporting West Scotland’s 15% tree canopy coverage with professional expertise and environmental responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our tree services in Glasgow and West Scotland, answered by our qualified tree surgeons and arborists
How much do tree services cost in Glasgow?
Tree service costs vary significantly depending on work requirements and site conditions throughout Glasgow and Central Scotland. Tree surgeon hourly rates typically start from £40+ per hour for qualified professionals, with comprehensive residential projects ranging from £300-£500 including VAT. Tree removal costs generally range from £150-£350 for standard 20ft trees, whilst stump removal ranges from £50-£300+ depending on size, access difficulty, and disposal requirements.
Factors affecting costs include tree size and species, access difficulty, proximity to buildings and utilities, disposal requirements, and work complexity. Emergency callouts and specialist equipment such as cranes increase costs but provide essential safety and efficiency benefits. We provide detailed, free quotations for all work ensuring transparent pricing with no hidden costs.
Do I need permission to cut down trees in my garden?
You may need permission depending on your tree’s protection status and location within Glasgow or surrounding areas. Trees with Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) require council consent with applications typically taking 8 weeks to process. Unauthorised work on TPO trees can result in unlimited fines, with previous cases seeing penalties up to £20,000 or more for serious breaches.
Properties in conservation areas require 6 weeks notice for any tree work exceeding certain thresholds. We can check TPO status through local authority databases, handle all applications professionally, and ensure full compliance with regulations. Our extensive experience with Glasgow City Council, Renfrewshire Council, South Lanarkshire Council, and surrounding local authorities ensures smooth permission processes when required.
When is the best time for tree work?
Late winter and early spring (November to March) provide optimal conditions for most tree work as trees remain dormant and bird nesting season restrictions don’t apply. However, timing varies significantly by species - cherry trees should be pruned in summer to prevent silver leaf disease, whilst fruit trees benefit from winter pruning for optimal spring growth.
Emergency work for safety can be carried out year-round with appropriate precautions and wildlife considerations. We avoid non-emergency work during bird nesting season (March-August) to comply with Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 requirements protecting nesting birds.
Do you provide free quotes for tree work?
Yes, we provide comprehensive free quotations for all domestic and commercial tree work across our Central Scotland service area including Glasgow, Paisley, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Stirling, and surrounding communities. Our qualified arborists assess your trees on-site, explain work requirements clearly, and provide detailed written quotes with no obligation whatsoever.
We believe in transparent pricing and take time to explain all aspects of proposed work, timing considerations, regulatory requirements, and ongoing maintenance recommendations. Emergency callouts may have different arrangements, but standard assessments and quotations are always provided free of charge throughout our coverage area.
What’s included in your tree service visits?
Our complete service includes initial professional assessment by qualified arborists, comprehensive safety checks and risk assessments, coordination of any required permissions or notifications, professional tree work using certified equipment and techniques, complete site cleanup and waste removal, and detailed aftercare advice for ongoing tree health and property protection.
We protect your property throughout work completion, coordinate with neighbours when necessary, and ensure all work meets current British Standards and local authority requirements. Site restoration ensures your property remains clean and tidy with minimal disruption to normal activities.
Are your tree services fully insured?
Yes, we carry comprehensive public liability insurance and employer’s liability coverage providing complete protection for your property and our workforce throughout all operations. All our tree surgeons hold full NPTC qualifications with ongoing professional development ensuring current competency and safety awareness.
We meet all health and safety requirements for domestic and commercial tree work across Central Scotland including risk assessment, method statements, and emergency procedures. We’re happy to provide insurance certificates and qualification documentation before commencing any work.

Jackie Breen
From the first time getting in touch with Callum, the service was fantastic, he came out gave us a great quote and was able to do the job very quickly. The boys that came to carry out the work were professional, friendly and worked non stop to get the job done, they were so careful with machinery on the property as well and left the garden and paths spotless before they left. I would highly recommend them.
"
Alan
Callum and his team arrived on the agreed day & time, carried out the tree felling with impeccable professionalism and cleared up after. The work was done at the quoted price and they were very pleasant guys with no bad language. I highly recommend CNJ and I will certainly be using Callum and his 5 star tree fellas again.
"
Robin Campbell
Callum and his team felled four 40-foot+ trees in our garden, facing particular challenges (2 trees hanging over our LPG tank, one menacing a precious rhododendron). They worked incredibly hard, were great to deal with and we would thoroughly recommend them.

The Range of Tree Surgery Work We Take On
- An initial site assessment by a qualified arborist, checking species, condition, disease and any structural weakness before recommending a method rather than just handing over a price
- Tree felling, crown reduction, crown thinning, pollarding, deadwooding and routine formative pruning, sized to what the tree actually needs rather than a standard package
- Stump removal, full root-ball excavation, or stump grinding, whichever suits the site and what you are planning to do with the ground afterwards
- Cabling and bracing for a tree with a structural weakness that is worth supporting rather than removing outright
- Dangerous, windblown and emergency tree removal, including out-of-hours storm response
- BS5837 tree surveys and risk assessments for planning applications, carried out by our NPTC Professional Tree Inspector
- Checking Tree Preservation Order and Conservation Area status before work starts, and handling the council application on your behalf where one is needed
- A full site clear-up once the work is done, timber and brash removed, paths and lawns left tidy rather than strewn with chippings
- Insurance claims support, including damage assessment and documentation for your insurer, where storm damage or a fallen tree is involved
- If you would like to keep some of the timber for your own log store rather than have it go into our woodfuel supply, we can leave it stacked on site instead, just let us know before the day
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Reseeding lawns, repairing driveways or making good other hard landscaping disturbed during access, unless that is agreed as part of the quote up front
- Statutory council fees for a TPO or planning application, where a local authority charges one, on top of our own admin in preparing and submitting it
- Replanting or new tree stock beyond whatever is separately agreed in a planting quote
- Full root-ball extraction if you choose grinding instead of removal, since ground-level grinding leaves the root system to break down naturally underground rather than pulling it out
- Non-emergency call-outs on a Sunday, which we keep clear for genuine emergencies only
- Third-party costs such as traffic management or a utility company isolating overhead lines on larger jobs, which we arrange on your behalf but which are billed separately
- Same-day slots for non-emergency work; routine bookings are scheduled in with the rest of the job list rather than fitted in immediately, storm response is the exception
What Actually Happens Once You Call Us
- Initial call or enquiry: You describe the tree, its access, and whether it is routine maintenance, storm damage, or tied to a planning application. We ask enough about the property to flag early whether a TPO or Conservation Area check is likely, since that changes the timeline more than the tree work itself does.
- On-site assessment: An arborist visits to check species, condition, access and risk in person, photos and phone descriptions only tell you so much about whether a trunk is hollow or a root plate has already started to lift. For planning cases or a high-value specimen tree, this is carried out as a formal BS5837 survey by our NPTC Professional Tree Inspector. Between roughly March and August we also check for active bird nests before recommending anything beyond deadwooding, since disturbing an active nest is a wildlife offence regardless of what the tree itself needs.
- Written quote and permissions: You get a written quote covering the work, the access plan and the clean-up, not a verbal figure that changes on the day. If a TPO or Conservation Area application is needed, we handle it with the relevant council, which can add several weeks before work can legally start, so we would rather flag that early than have it come as a surprise later.
- The work itself: The crew arrives with whatever the site needs from our own fleet, spider lift, 360 excavator or forwarder, rather than waiting on hired plant, and either climbs and rigs the tree down piece by piece or dismantles it mechanically depending on access, species and how much room there is to drop material safely.
- Clear-up and waste processing: Timber and brash are taken from site the same day wherever possible; larger sections go to our own woodfuel operation and smaller branches are chipped for landscaping or biomass, so very little of what comes down off your tree ends up in a skip.
- Aftercare: We leave the site tidy and talk through what is actually next, whether the remaining tree needs a follow-up prune in a year or two, whether the stump is worth grinding now or leaving until you are ready to landscape, and anything else worth knowing about the tree stock left standing.
What Drives the Price of a Tree Surgery Job
Price on tree work turns mostly on access and method rather than the tree’s size on its own. A crown reduction you can reach from an open driveway with a single ladder or small platform costs less to arrange than felling the same-sized tree hemmed in by a garden wall, a shed and a neighbour’s fence, where a mechanised dismantle from the spider lift, or a full climb-and-rig job with a ground crew catching every section on ropes, is the only safe way to bring it down. Height and diameter matter too, but mostly because they decide which method is available at all: a large-diameter trunk over 380mm needs an experienced climber rated for that size, and a tree over a certain height with no clear drop zone usually rules out simple felling altogether. Stump work follows a similar logic. Digging out a stump’s full root ball, useful if you are about to build, pave, or plant something else with its own root system in that spot, costs more in time and machinery than grinding, which takes the stump down below ground level and leaves the roots to break down on their own. A BS5837 survey for a planning application, or a TPO and Conservation Area check we handle with the council on your behalf, is priced separately from any physical tree work, and depends on how many trees are involved and how complex the site is; a single garden tree survey is a different job from a full arboricultural report for a multi-plot development. Time of year plays a smaller but real part too: between spring and late summer, when birds are nesting, non-emergency felling or heavy pruning on a tree with an active nest has to wait until the nest empties naturally, which can shift a job by weeks rather than change its price outright, whereas storm and dangerous-tree work goes ahead regardless because safety takes priority over the nesting season. Because every one of those variables changes the job, we do not quote a firm figure over the phone beyond a rough steer. A proper price only follows an on-site assessment, and that comes with a written quote before anything is booked in, so you are not committing to work based on a guess.
How a Generalist Tree Surgeon Visit Compares With Booking a Specialist Crew
One Team for the Whole Job, Not Just One Part of It
A lot of tree work gets split across specialists, one firm for the felling, another brought in for a BS5837 survey, a separate contractor for stump grinding once the trunk is gone. CNJ Tree Services keeps all of that under one roof. Founder Callum Jackson is our NPTC Professional Tree Inspector, so the same person who might sign off a BS5837 survey for your planning application is drawing on around 18 years of hands-on chainsaw work in a family that has been in Scottish forestry for three generations, not a desk-based consultant with no felling experience of their own. The rest of the crew climbs, rigs and runs the fleet on the same jobs, so a routine crown thin, a felling job, and the stump grinding that follows it can all be booked as one visit rather than three separate contractors coordinating around each other.
That continuity matters more for a general tree surgery relationship than for a single one-off removal: a tree we have pruned or reduced this year is one we already know the condition and history of if it needs attention again in a few years, rather than a new crew starting from scratch each time. We are also investing in the trade itself rather than just running jobs through it, supporting Modern Apprenticeships and local woodland regeneration and conservation work across Central Scotland, on the view that a tree surgery business ought to be putting something back into the tree stock it works on, not just taking wood out of it. Supporting Modern Apprenticeships also feeds back into that continuity, since it means the climbers doing your crown reduction in five years’ time have come up through the same crew rather than being whoever a subcontractor could find that week. Every job is still covered by £5 million public liability insurance and carried out to British Standard BS3998, with a First Aid +F trained crew for chainsaw-specific emergencies, but the bigger difference for routine tree surgery, as against a single dismantle or removal job, is having the same team available for whatever the tree needs next.
| Consideration | CNJ Tree Services | Typical specialist or subcontracted crew |
|---|---|---|
| Machinery on the day | Owns its plant fleet outright, spider lift cherry picker, forwarders, 360 excavators, timber cranes, so there is no wait on hired-in kit | Often hires cranes or platforms per job, which can add lead time and cost |
| Planning-grade surveys | In-house NPTC Professional Tree Inspector producing BS5837 surveys for TPO and planning cases | Usually needs an outside consultant brought in for a BS5837 report |
| Ground protection | Low-ground-pressure tracked machinery limits lawn and soil damage on domestic gardens, golf courses and business parks | Standard wheeled plant can compact turf and soil on soft ground |
| Range of work in one team | Routine pruning, felling, stump work, cabling, surveys and emergency response are all handled by the same crew, so nothing needs referring elsewhere | Often specialises in one job type, felling only, or surveys only, and refers the rest out |
| What happens to the waste | All timber and brash processed locally, larger sections seasoned for the firm’s own woodfuel supply, smaller branches chipped for landscaping or biomass | Waste often goes to third-party disposal, adding cost and losing the material |
| Emergency cover | 24/7 storm response within 50 miles, average arrival under 2 hours | Varies, often next-day or handled by a separate out-of-hours subcontractor |
| Ongoing relationship | The same crew returns for future pruning cycles and already knows the site’s access and the tree’s history | Often a one-off booking with no continuity between visits |
The Ground We Cover, and What Local Conditions Mean for the Work
Newton Place, just off Sauchiehall Street near Charing Cross, is where the trucks and trailers set out from each morning, and our standard domestic radius runs about 10 miles out from there. Heading out along the A82 Great Western Road takes in Kelvinside, Hyndland, Dowanhill, Hillhead and Partick before reaching Bearsden, Milngavie and on to Torrance and Kirkintilloch; cross the M8 at Charing Cross and the ground shifts toward Maryhill, Dennistoun and Bishopbriggs. South over the river, the M77 corridor serves Pollokshields, Shawlands, Langside, Giffnock, Newton Mearns, Clarkston, Barrhead, Busby, Waterfoot and Carmunnock, while the Erskine Bridge crossing extends the same radius west to Clydebank, Renfrew, Paisley and Bishopton. Southeast, Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Uddingston, Blantyre and the northern edge of East Kilbride sit within the same reach.
Much of what we see locally traces back to the ground and the tree stock rather than the postcode. A good deal of that ground follows the Clyde and Kelvin river valleys and the Forth and Clyde Canal, and the clay-heavy soil across that basin holds water after heavy rain, which is a regular factor in windblown call-outs, since a waterlogged root plate lets go more easily than one in free-draining ground. The mature Victorian planting inside Glasgow’s Conservation Areas, Pollokshields and the West End especially, usually brings a TPO or Conservation Area check with Glasgow City, East Dunbartonshire or East Renfrewshire council before we can start, since these are exactly the streets where a council is most likely to have already protected the tree stock. Gardens on the higher, more exposed ground near the Cathkin Braes, the Kilpatrick Hills and the southern edge of the Campsies take noticeably more wind damage than sheltered inner-city plots, which shows up as a steadier trickle of storm call-outs from those addresses even in a fairly ordinary winter. Trees close to the canal towpath and riverside walking routes through the Kelvin and Clyde valleys sometimes need co-ordination with the path or waterway operator before we can close off a section for safe felling, which is a factor we flag at the assessment stage rather than after work is booked. Storm call-outs run further, out to a 50-mile radius, and commercial site clearance, utility pruning and estate management jobs are carried out across Scotland rather than being held to the 10-mile domestic limit.

Get a Tree Assessed Before the Next Storm Front Moves Through
Leaning trees and deadwood do not get safer while you wait for a quieter week, and if a TPO or Conservation Area check turns out to be needed, that process alone can run for weeks before work is allowed to start. Book a site visit now and you will have a written quote, a clear answer on permissions, and a start date, not just an estimate over the phone. The sooner a tree with a problem gets looked at, the more options are usually still open, a crown reduction now can sometimes do the job that would otherwise need felling later.
